Alyssa’s Law is legislation that requires public schools to have silent panic alarms that directly notify law enforcement in the event of an emergency. Alyssa’s Law was signed into legislation and named for Alyssa Alhadeff, one of the victims of the 2018 Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in Parkland, Florida. The tragic event resulted in the loss of 17 students and staff, with 17 others critically injured.
Alyssa’s Law recognizes that in the event of an emergency, response time matters. In fact, it can mean the difference between life and death. The legislation seeks to improve the amount of time it takes law enforcement and emergency response teams to respond to life-threatening events by implementing a set of standards to which all schools must adhere.
It’s every parent and teacher’s nightmare: a shooting at school. When we see images and read reports on gun violence at schools like Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas; Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School and Sandy Hook Elementary, one of the first questions we ask is – how could we have prevented this?
